Dear Congressman
I as a Icelander have to inform you of the situation in Iceland before Sweden lends its money to the Icelandic government. The situation here is dire. Every Saturday for last 15 weeks people have been gathering in the central square of Reykjavik protesting the current situation in Iceland. The number of protectors have been about 1-5% of the nation. Now protests are rising all over the country.
The general conception of the people is that the government, monitory institutions and the banks have all failed. The demand is now to establish a new Icelandic sovereignty, the old one has failed the people say. The government has been especially tight lipped and has not revealed any master plan out of the current economic situation i.e. keeping everyone in limbo. The central bank is technically bankrupt and its head has no support here or elsewhere in the world. The 3 banks that have been nationalized are giving back companies to the people that bankrupted them. 70% of all companies in Iceland are technically bankrupt. 40% of all households.
We Icelanders are proud of our close friendship with Sweden, therefore I feel it my duty to inform the Swedish congress that lending money to the current government of Iceland is like giving a wolf a sheep i.e. he will eat it without sharing anything. In the current situation if I where able to lend to the Icelandic government I would not do so. There is absolutely no guarantee that the money will be put to any good.
Lastly I would like to point out a discussion that was in the state TV today. This is a discussion with Anna Siebert and Willem Buiter economists about a report they made for one of the banks and was never published. The central bank and ministry of finance knew about this report in April 08. The report describes imminent collapse of the Icelandic banking system. http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://dagskra.ruv.is%2Fsjonvarpid%2F4440915%2F2009%2F01%2F18%2F3

Sænska útgáfan var fín. Ég skrifaði hana á norsku og er hún að finna á mína siðu.
